Different Types Of Safety Equipment To Ensure Workplace Safety

Different Types Of Safety Equipment To Ensure Workplace Safety Many people who work in high-risk  professions often tend to not take safety seriously enough, despite the fact that  on-the-job injuries  do occurs from time to time.  While  this  may sometimes be  due  to  a small business  employer  cutting  corners  to save costs, this is not always the case. At times, unsupervised workers may decide that its faster and  easier to work unencumbered without safety equipment. At other times, too, an independent contractor might impulsively decide that they can get away with not following safety precautions. Regardless of who is in charge of the project and regardless of the reasons why its more convenient not to don safety equipment or go through a safety routine, you must ensure  that you are safe even  at  work or even if you are working  on  your  own  DIY  project. If you need safety equipment you should not only have it, you should also use it properly. Lets  take a quick look at some standard safety equipment and how you should use it. Safetyequipment to protect your eyes. If you work in an area where there is flying debris or dangerous fumes, its not enough to rely on your regular glasses to prevent damage to your eyes. You should wear  prescription safety glasses. Your eyesight is invaluable; the last thing you want to do is endanger your vision because of a moment of carelessness. Safety equipment to protect your feet.   Foot and ankle injuries on the job are surprisingly common, and they are either caused by the  victim not wearing any  type of safety shoes or boots  or  because of not selecting the right type of safety footwear  for the type of environment they are working in. Considering the advancements in safety footwear in recent years, its also surprising that there is often little awareness about the value of this  type of safety equipment in the construction,  fishing, and logging industries.  These types of shoes  should also be worn by electricians, as well as by  factory workers operating  heavy equipment. The  worst type of  foot injuries  includes  crushed feet, broken foot bones, damage to toes,  loss of toes,  puncture  wounds, lacerations, cuts, burns, and  electric shocks. Minor injuries, like  fractures and sprains, can also occur by slipping, tripping, or falling. Safety  equipment  to protect your hands. According to the official magazine of the National Safety Council,  workplace safety hazards to the hands  can cause cuts, burns, or chemical damage. It is important to choose the right glove for the particular  type  of  work  being  done. Safety  equipment  to  protect  your  whole  body. Some  jobs  do  require  full-body  protection  to  prevent injury from extreme hot or cold environments, splashing molten metals or  hot liquids, and random sparks and flames. Protective clothing is also necessary when working with hazardous chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and radiation. Different types of clothing are required for different risks. For instance, someone working around sparks, flames,  or  hot  liquids  needs  to  wear  flame-retardant, heat-resistant fabrics while someone who works around bloodborne pathogens or chemical hazards needs to wear rubber, neoprene, or PVC clothing. Five  tips for purchasing safety equipment: First, never  purchase safety  equipment  that does  not  meet  safety standards established  by the  American National Standards Institute  (ANSI). Second, select  safety equipment based on the environment that you are working in. For instance, when buying safety shoes, wear shoes with soft soles for indoor conditions where the floors could be slippery and use boots with rugged soles for outdoor work. Third, choose  safety equipment made out of the best material for the job. This  type of material will be defined  by the type  of  environment or the nature of the work. Fourth, decide on  safety equipment that does more than just keep you safe. It also has to be  comfortable to wear. It should not be too tight or too lose,  cause any type of skin irritation, or cause the body to be too cold or  too hot.  The last thing you need is safety equipment that is problematic, one that causes an accident because it slips, slides, or rubs abrasively against your body. Fifth, only buy safety equipment from a reputable  dealer.  Avoid the  temptation  to save money  by  purchasing equipment at  bargain prices from an unknown  dealer.  While you may have to pay a  higher price  for  premium  safety equipment,  it is money well-spent because it ensures your well-being.

Harmless Personality Trait or Mental Health Condition Knowing The Difference

Harmless Personality Trait or Mental Health Condition Knowing The Difference We never had autism in my day! When I was growing up, no one had panic attacks! Depression is nonsense just go for a walk, and youll cheer right up! The above are all examples of attitudes that some members of the older population are guilty of saying. Despite the ignorance, this type of rhetoric causes real problems for one reason alone: its believable. If you dont know more about mental health, then its easy to see the explosion in diagnosis of mental health conditions as a bad reflection on society. The reason its important to raise this is because these attitudes are pernicious. You may have even heard some of the above; they are generally used to diminish the mental suffering of those diagnosed with conditions. This leads directly to people who have mental health conditions keeping them hidden and thats if they even know about them at all. The Line: Personality Quirk vs.. Mental Illness There is some truth to the fact that, 200 years ago, someone with what we would now call a mental illness would just be seen as being odd. A good example is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). 200 years ago, someone repetitively doing the same actions would like have just been seen as slightly eccentric. Now, we recognize it as one of the most damaging mental health conditions. Fortunately, despite was some would believe, there has been no explosion of mental health problems. As the example above shows, they have always been there but we have just got better at recognizing them. History is on the side of medical knowledge too. There are documented cases of what was referred to as shell shock after the World Wars a condition we now know as PTSD. So if these illnesses are now being diagnosed at a much better rate why are some people still suffering needlessly? Stigma. The stigma against mental health is still powerful, though becoming a little better understood. Lack of knowledge. For those of us who do not have, or have never known someone with, a mental health condition well, we have no idea what to look for. This brings us to the simple question of what do you look out for? At what point does an eccentricity, seemingly just part of someones character, become more troubling? Why Diagnosis Is Important Either for yourself or someone you know, there is no harm in querying the status of your mental health. Assuming that youre fine spurred on by the kind of dialogue quoted at the beginning is a damaging road, because sometimes, people arent fine. If someone has a mental health condition, they require assistance and support. By finding the cause and then coming up with solutions, society can provide some of the things that person needs. In essence: dont be afraid to question, especially if its about yourself. If you find yourself struggling with dark and unpleasant thoughts, then it might not be a bad mood. Have a habit of repetitive motions and uninvited thoughts; then it might not just be neurotic. So Where Is The Difference? There is no checklist for identifying if a personality trait is actually a sign of something deeper. With mental health, the burden of proof is all on the individual and most specifically, how they feel. If someone has a habit of liking things clean and can laugh about their Monica Gellar tendencies, then its probably personality. Or if someone is prone to melodrama, then maybe theyre just prone to melodrama. Or even if someone experiences a rapid change of mood regularly, that might just be the way theyre wired theres nothing wrong, theyre just themselves. Where these things become a problem is when the person concerned (you or someone else) is distressed by how they think and feel. If they can make jokes, laugh it off then theres no cause for concern. If someone feels the need to hide, is embarrassed by or worries constantly about their situation, then further help may be needed. Those personality traits listed above, when damaging, become clinical diagnoses for OCD; Histrionic Personality Disorder or BiPolar Disorder. What Do You Do If You Are Concerned About How You Think and Feel? With the above established, the immediate next step is action. There are various tools online to help you find more information, such as a bipolar test or various online forums. You can talk to people who suffer from the illness you suspect you may have and see if your experience matches up. There may be a sense of embarrassment about seeking out medical help. Its normal to be concerned that youre going to be dismissed and told that youre just strange; its something many sufferers cite as a major worry prior to their diagnosis. If youre concerned about someone else, the situation is even more difficult to manage. It can be almost impossible to find a way of bringing up these issues without sounding accusatory. In these instances, its probably best to drop hints, lay breadcrumbs and encourage them on their own path of discovery. Or you can be brave, grit your teeth and raise the subject. Talking To A Medical Professional First Steps  If you get to the point of visiting a doctor or have someone you care about doing so then its a testing time. But remember this: doctors love healthy people. They love those they can tell are fine, tell them not to worry it makes their day. So go and discuss it, so you can at least settle the idea in your mind. But remember: even if one doctor says its not a problem, its up to you if it is. There are cases of missed diagnosis scattered throughout mental health cases, so if you remain concerned, seek a second opinion. You see, the only thing that defines a personality trait from an illness is how you feel about it. If you find it troubling, then thats the end of the line and someone needs to assist you. . 5 Reasons Why You Shouldnt Negotiate on Rates Ever

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Negotiate on Rates… Ever When you take on a new vacancy, it’s highly unlikely that you’re going to send over your terms of business to the client and find that they whizz them straight back signed and without question. When that does happen it’s the exception rather than the rule! What’s more likely is that you’re going to have to have the rates conversation. You know it’s coming and they know it’s coming. It’s a standard part of the recruitment dance. Now you may be thinking to yourself that they’re a great client with a super vacancy and you reckon you’ve got a good chance of filling it. As recruiters, we all like to say yes, so to appease the client and get the work agreed, you negotiate. After all, you’ll get the work on and that’s a good thing, right? Actually, I’d beg to differ. There’s a reason you charge a certain rate and that’s because, as the L’Oreal advert so succinctly puts it, ‘you’re worth it’. Here are five reasons why you should never compromise your worth by dropping your rates. They’re paying for your experience, not just a piece of work. The client looks at the salary they’re going to be paying for their new permanent member of staff and works out your fee percentage. Usually their mind is thinking along the lines of ‘How much?! For a few CVs??!!’ On the surface of it, that’s exactly what they see that they get. However as recruiters, we know there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes, that usually the client has no idea about, so it’s time to educate them. Your client is not just paying you a fee for the piece of work you’re doing for them, what they’re actually paying for is your experience. They say it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a master at something and recruitment is no different. Your client is paying for the thousands of calls you’ve already made, the CVs you’ve trawled through, the interviews you’ve conducted and the knowledge you’ve accumulated along the way. They’re paying for the time you’ve spent getting to know the market, the trends and the competition so the day they give you a job to work on, you’re ready to deliver. You’re already saving them time as you can eliminate all the places you don’t need to look. So next time a client’s mouth drops open when they work out your fee, remember they’re not paying X amount for X number of CVs, they’re actually paying for your 10,000 hours of mastery. Work that out on an hourly rate and it doesn’t seem like such a bad deal! ‘But we usually only pay 15% on recruitment fees…’ Who hasn’t heard this one before? Some clients do like to tell you in no uncertain terms what they usually pay and what their ‘company policy’ is. However, not all recruiters are created equal. Some, it’s fair to say, care mostly about putting bums on seats for interview. The ‘shove ‘em in and stack ‘em high’ approach. Throw enough mud around and some of it’s bound to stick. Well if that approach works for their clients, then so be it. They can keep the 15%. It’s a little like buying dinner. By all means, tell the world you only pay £5 for a meal. That’ll get you a good spread at a well-known fast-food chain (though it may also clog your arteries and leave you feeling a little nauseous afterwards). However, try telling that to a chef in a cordon bleu Michelin starred establishment and I’m sure you can imagine their response! You pay for what you get and recruitment is no different! Rather than firing wildly in all directions and hoping that something will hit the target, if you value your specialist eye and the skills you’ve developed, it’s time to stick to your guns. If you know that you’re positioned to find not just plenty of likely-looking CVs but actually the right potential candidates for the job, then it may be time to say ‘thank you Mr Client, I appreciate your company policy however for the reasons we’ve just discussed I’m unable to help you with this assignment at 15%. If you’re unable to fill the vacancy through other means, please do come back to me and we can discuss it again.’ Know your worth. If you’re recruiting for one of your clients and your candidate tells you that they want at least £35,000 a year because they believe their skills and experience make them worth that much, what would your reaction be? Unless they’re wildly out of the ball park on the value of their skills and experience, you’d probably agree that was a fair wage. It’s unlikely that you’d try to convince them to take a job for £29,000 simply because your client told you that’s what they usually pay. So, bearing this in mind, why as a recruiter are you any different? If you believe you’re worth a certain amount, why would you even consider taking any less? Sometimes the client might just be super pushy and/or persuasive. Sometimes they may have just caught you at a time when you’d be willing to negotiate just to get another vacancy on the board. Before you drop your prices, remember this is usually only a short-term fix and not a long-term strategy. Not only is it hard to put your prices back up once you’ve dropped them, but if you don’t know your worth how do you expect anyone else to know it? So which bit of my service don’t you want, exactly? Sometimes clients just don’t appreciate that recruitment is a process. It isn’t a singular event. More often than not it certainly isn’t a simple case of firing off a few emails, then sitting back cheerily as the perfect candidate miraculously rolls in. Actually, it’s a series of intricate events that when combined successfully and with skill, produce great results. If your client doesn’t understand this, make it your job to educate them. Explain the difference between a run-of-the-mill recruitment service and what you offer. Let them know that you go the extra mile. You personally interview each candidate. You invest time in speaking to colleagues and bosses, and reference check with the zeal of a bloodhound. You dig deeper to find the best candidates and their true motivations. Your reputation is built on finding the best candidates, and your investment into the recruitment process is exactly why the client pays the fees they do. If the client wants to drop the rate they pay, then ask them which corners they’d like you to cut. I can pretty much guarantee the answer will be ‘absolutely none’! The magic of the ‘little black book’. Clients aren’t just paying for your time. They’re not even just paying for your considerable skills and experience. They’re also paying for that special little something on your desk. You know what I’m talking about. I’m talking about that little tome that holds all your contacts. That treasured list of contacts is like gold-dust. And, in much the same manner as panning for gold, you’ve got to know exactly where to start looking. Clients could waste weeks, months even, trying to locate a starting point for what they’re looking for. But you, with your fabulous little black book stuffed with contacts, know exactly where to turn in a matter of minutes. And believe me, that’s one of the most valuable assets you have. The truth is that fantastic desirable candidates are becoming less visible. They’re coming off LinkedIn. They don’t want to be found. They’re sick of being spammed by recruiters. They’re virtually in hiding and are busy concentrating on going about their day jobs. But you, with your black book know exactly who to call to start searching out exactly what you need. This is absolute gold, please make sure you don’t forget it! And so they STILL want to negotiate? Sometimes, in spite of all this, you’ll still get a client who likes to haggle. If you encounter this, a great tactic is to be playful with it. Reply with a polite ‘sorry, I know you want to negotiate, but I really can’t put my price up any more, this is absolutely the most I’m willing to charge!’ Humour often diffuses the situation, but perhaps more importantly it also drives the point home. Be strong and proud, because you really are worth it.

How to deal with exam stress and anxiety

How to deal with exam stress and anxiety The exam season for most students can be a very stressful period. Some students manage to pass their exams with just a tinge of stress, while others suffer from constant crippling anxiety, accompanied with heart palpitations, upset stomachs and very sweaty hands. And, they think that no matter how many times they revise, they still have not learned anything. If you are one of them, you have come to the right place. Here are ten tips on how to deal with your exam stress: Get good sleep  Even though sleeping might be the last thing on your mind when you are in your exam period, it is crucial for your body and mind to sleep in order to function properly. You might think that the more you stay up all night to study the better, but, it is actually the opposite. A good night’s sleep will help you memorize better. Get some good rest during the days following your exams. Drink water and eat properly One of the most important mistakes that students do is forget to hydrate or eat while they study for their exams. If you can’t seem to remember to eat or drink water, you should try making up an alarm every hour reminding you to hydrate and take a break to eat. Take breaks from studying Not only do you need breaks to eat and function like a normal human being, you brain also needs a break from all the information that is getting inside. Try relaxing for fifteen minutes, or go to the outdoors for a breath of fresh air. That would make you more relaxed and less stressed. Do some physical activity Exercise of any kind, running or swimming, will give you endorphins which make you happy and much more calm. It also gives you much more energy than any coffee can give you. Talk to someone If you are getting ready for exams, chances are that you have not left your room in a while. In order for you to be less anxious, maybe you should try talking to someone close, a friend or family, to take your mind off of the upcoming exams. Sometimes, even venting to someone about the stress you are feeling can be somewhat relieving. Do your favorite hobbies If you are quite certain that you have done all the revising that there is to be done for the day, try to wind down with one of your favorite hobbies. Watch a movie, read a book, or even cook something. Don’t drink too much coffee before the actual exam The rush of energy that the caffeine gives might sound tempting, but too much coffee before your exam would just make you more anxious and nervous. Coffee can upset your stomach even more before the exam, which will add to the stress you are feeling. Try thinking positive and relaxing thoughts This is one of the hardest things you could try to do while sitting on an exam table, but those positive thoughts will only do you good. You would remember better and you would not be having a hard time trying to collect your thoughts. Don’t get distracted by your social media If you are having trouble concentrating on your studies and it’s increasing your stress, try decreasing the number of times you open your phone to check your Instagram, Facebook or any other social media account that you have. Put your phone away as far as possible and focus on studying. Remember the last time you had an exam It is crucial for you to remember your last exam season, because then you will remember that it all went down smoothly and you were worrying for nothing. If it did not go smoothly, as yourself what went wrong and try to do things differently this time around.
